Somalia repatriates 22 nationals detained in Sudan over irregular migration

Monday December 9, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) — Somali government has successfully repatriated 22 of its citizens who had been detained in Sudan for attempting irregular migration.

The group, comprising 17 young men and five young women, had been detained in Dongola and Gadaref detention facilities for three months.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ahmed Moallim Fiqi hailed the operation as a significant step toward addressing the challenges of irregular migration and safeguarding Somali nationals abroad.

“This milestone reflects our commitment to protecting our citizens and ensuring their safe return,” Fiqi stated.

The operation was coordinated through the efforts of several key officials and agencies, including the Presidential Special Envoy on Immigration, Ambassador Mariam Yassin; the Director of Diaspora Affairs, Mr. Ibrahim Mohamud Guure; Jowhar Barqab, Women’s Chairperson of Banadir Regional Administration; and the Chairperson of the National Commission for Refugees and IDPs (NCRI), Mrs. Safia Hassan Mohamed.

Two days ago, the government brought back 161 of its citizens stranded in Libya through the United Nations-backed Voluntary Humanitarian Return program. Seventy-four nationals returned to Hargeisa in northwestern Somalia, while 87 others were welcomed back to Mogadishu.
