Somali government suspends domestic passenger flights amid Raskamboni dispute

Friday December 6, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) — Somali government has reportedly suspended all passenger flights to some regions after airlines refused to operate in the Raskamboni area of the Lower Jubba region, citing safety concerns.

The suspension has left hundreds of passengers stranded at Mogadishu's Aden Adde International Airport on Friday.

The flight cancellations follow Jubbaland's recent warning to airlines against flying to Raskamboni, describing it as a security risk amid ongoing tensions between the federal government and Jubbaland authorities. The dispute escalated last month after federal forces were deployed to secure the area, triggering political friction between Mogadishu and Kismayo.

Former Somali Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire criticized the government's decision to suspend flights, calling it "regrettable" and highlighting its impact on vulnerable citizens, including women, children, and older people.

MP Hassan Abdinur also condemned the suspension, urging President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to reverse the decision to alleviate the hardships faced by travellers.

The Somali government has not issued an official statement addressing the flight suspensions or the growing criticism from political leaders and the public.
