Mogadishu (HOL) — Former Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo criticized the recent clashes between security forces and auto-rickshaw drivers protesting increased license taxes in Mogadishu.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Farmaajo expressed his disapproval of the government's handling of the protests, which have led to several injuries. He highlighted the challenging conditions under which the youth, particularly Bajaj drivers, work and emphasized that they deserve support rather than additional financial burdens.
"The suffering and injuries inflicted on them today while they were peacefully presenting their grievances in Mogadishu is unacceptable and is a disappointment to the aspirations of Somali youth who stood up for the reconstruction of their country," the statement said.
He called on government agencies to prioritize the healthcare of those injured during the protests, noting that many depend on their daily labor for survival.
The condemnation comes just a week after former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire called on President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to apologize to the nation's youth for remarks made during a speech at a mosque in the Presidential Palace.
Mohamud had criticized young people for complaining about the lack of job opportunities, suggesting that those who previously collected money for al-Shabab group or engaged in theft are complaining today.
Khaire described Mohamud's remarks as "offensive and unjust," urging the president to responsibly listen to the youth's concerns and acknowledge their difficult circumstances. He also emphasized Somali youth's crucial role in the country's liberation, unity, and ongoing efforts to build and defend the nation.
Youth unemployment remains a critical issue in Somalia, with an estimated 67% of young people out of work, one of the highest rates globally.
