Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali government has arrested several army officers in response to a deadly al-Shabab attack at a popular beachside hotel in Mogadishu on Friday night.

The attack, which targeted the Lido Beach View Hotel, killed at least 35 people and 126 others wounded.

Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre announced the arrests, stating that strict measures were being taken and that the officers on duty around Liido Beach were being held accountable. However, he did not provide details about the number of officers arrested or their identities.

The Prime Minister made the statement after visiting Erdogan's hospital, where some injured civilians receive treatment. He emphasized that al-Shabab targets public places when they are defeated on the battlefield, aiming to harm young people in particular.

Prime Minister Barre described the attack as a "barbaric atrocity" that goes against the values of Somali religion and culture. He called for unified support for the victims and the ongoing emergency operations. He also extended condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a swift recovery for the injured.

In the wake of the attack, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Barre convened an emergency security meeting in Mogadishu to address the situation and discuss measures to enhance the capital's security.

In March this year, the government arrested 16 people in connection with the March 14 attack on an upscale SYL hotel near the presidential palace in Mogadishu. The Somali National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) said the suspects included a man accused of being the "mastermind" of the attack. NISA accused the key suspect of facilitating the smuggling of the vehicles that al-Shabab militants used for the attack.
