Friday August 2, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) — Somali Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre concluded the second conference of Somali religious scholars and clerics in Mogadishu on Thursday.

The three-day event, themed "One Somalia," gathered over a hundred religious leaders from various regions and abroad to discuss anti-terrorism, Somali governance, secession, and social threats.

Prime Minister Barre emphasized the vital role of Somali scholars in the nation's rebuilding and development. He urged clerics to strengthen their solidarity and overcome divisions, calling on them to lead the fight against terror groups, particularly al-Shabab, which he identified as a significant threat to the nation's economy, society, and existence.

"Terrorists propagate ignorance, bad religion, and bad behaviour, leading to a nation without culture and leadership," Barre stated.

Barre encouraged scholars to combat tribalism and other threats to the Somali Muslim nation and expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Religion and Endowments for organizing the conference for the second consecutive year.

He also extended condolences to the families of prominent scholars, including Sheikh Osman Hiddig and Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh.

Haniyeh, 62, was killed in a predawn strike at his residence in Tehran after participating in the inauguration of Iran's new president. His killing has raised concerns about regional stability and the potential escalation of the Gaza conflict.

Somalia has condemned the assassination of Haniyeh, with the Foreign Ministry labelling the incident a violation of international law and expressing deep concern over the increasing violence in the region.
