Puntland Vice President accuses federal government of centralizing power in presidency

Monday April 15, 2024

Garowe (HOL) — Puntland Vice President Osman Ilyas Lugator has argued that Somalia's governance system was transformed into an autocratic regime after 30 years, with the country's power centralized in the president's office.

During a debate on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday night, Mr. Lugator stated that the constitution amendment aimed to strip regional governments and the Prime Minister's office of their powers.

"This new constitution establishes a unitary system, where all power is concentrated in the president; the country is now losing the balance of power," Lugator remarked.

The Vice President emphasized that the erosion of power-sharing in the government has overshadowed Puntland's efforts in nation-building. He asserted that Puntland remains committed to Somalia and consistently advocates for nation-building based on federal unity and the protection of Somalia's constitution.

Vice President Lugator cautioned that the amendment of Somalia's constitution could lead to the country's division.
