Hiiraan State President Criticizes Lack of Development Projects in the Region

Sunday September 3, 2023

MAHAS, Somalia (HOL) - Ali Jeyte Osman, the former governor of the Hiiraan region and current president of Hiiraan State, addressed a large gathering in the Mahas district today. He criticized both the Hirshabelle administration and the federal government for their lack of significant projects in Hiiraan.

President Ali Jeyte commented on the absence of a proactive administration that truly represented the people after key collaborative stakeholders had left the region.

"Throughout my tenure in Hiiraan, there hasn't been a single project of note," he said. "Whether in terms of securing funds for Somalia's debt or launching other initiatives, nothing substantial has been accomplished. Governance should genuinely cater to the needs of the people, not just offer empty promises."

Jeyte's statement comes at a crucial time, as he is slated to meet with President Hasan Sheikh in Mahas today. In the days that follow, President Hasan Sheikh plans to send a delegation to Mahas to strategize against Alshabaab.

Despite existing tensions in the Hiiraan region, President Hasan Sheikh has initiated dialogue with Hiiraan politicians opposing the government. He encourages them to bridge their differences and join forces with the central government against the Alshabaab militia.

Hiiraan, being a pioneer in countering Alshabaab, achieved success without substantial government support. The current operations in the region further attest to this resilience. Many believe the government hasn't adequately supported Hiiraan's endeavors. Critics argue that credit is due to the local champions who spearheaded the fight against Alshabaab.
