The colonel was on the base when it was attacked by Al-Shabaab. A few days prior to the incident, Al-Shabaab had broadcasted visuals related to the attack. Yet, they haven't confirmed if Colonel Mukhtar was among the casualties during the Awsweyn assault.

Jawaahir Baarqab, a relative of Colonel Mukhtar, told BBC Somali that their family has encountered conflicting reports about his fate — whether he's alive or dead. However, they remain hopeful, believing he's still alive and serving the country. "The feedback we've received suggests he's in hiding, healthy, and continues to serve the nation," Jawaahir Baarqab mentioned.

She further added that the family is awaiting updates from the Somali Ministry of Defense and other associated officers.

Meanwhile, the Somali Government hasn't released any official information about the colonel's status. Interestingly, the deputy minister of information refuted claims regarding the officer's condition, neither confirming nor denying his well-being or demise.

It's worth noting that the Somali government has experienced significant losses in their ongoing battle against Al-Shabaab. Among the fallen are the deputy commander of Danab, Hassan Tuure, Farhaan Qaroole, the police chief of the Banaadir region, and Abshir Mahamuud Mohamed Shataqeey, the leader of the 3rd Brigade of the 27th Division. All were tragically killed in separate attacks in the Bal'ad, Basra, and Hawaadley regions.
