Mogadishu (HOL) - Al-Shabaab fighters attacked a Somali military base on the outskirts of Mogadishu on Friday morning.
The militant fighters began the attack with a suicide car bombing, followed by a gun battle at the base in Elasha Biyaha, about 15 km south of the capital.
The Al-Shabaab group claimed to have killed 49 government soldiers during the attack, but HOL has not confirmed these claims. Government officials have not commented on the attack as of yet.
Images from the explosion scene show significant damage caused by the blast, with civilian homes also being affected.
The attack occurred one day after security forces intercepted a vehicle transporting military supplies, fuel, and food bound for Al-Shabaab militants during a planned operation in the Dawacoley village, situated between Hindhere and Gadon towns in the Galgaduud region on Friday.
Since President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud assumed power in May 2022, the government has been actively engaged in a robust campaign against Al-Shabaab militants.
