Al Shabab militants attack a security checkpoint in Lower Shabelle region

Mogadishu (HOL) - Several casualties are feared following an attack by al-Shabab militants on a security checkpoint in the Yaqbari Weyne district of the Lower Shabelle region on Sunday night.

According to reports, the militants started the attack with a suicide car bombing followed by a gun battle. Federal lawmaker Dahir Amin Jesow, who stayed with the attacked army, stated that government and local militia forces killed several militants during the attack.

"We defended ourselves against the Khawarij who attacked us, and we delivered a significant blow. We have the militants' bodies, which we will display to the media," said MP Jesoow.

The lawmaker acknowledged that the local army sustained casualties during the attack, and the wounded were transported to the Danab army camp at Baledogle Airfield for medical treatment.

The attack comes a day after the Somali National Army (SNA) thwarted a suicide car bomb attack on a military base in the Bari-ujeed area in central Somalia. On Sunday, Guriel District Commissioner Farah Abdi Moalim told reporters that the forces had defeated al-Shabab militants in the fierce fighting that left five soldiers dead.
