Rival al-Shabab militant groups clash in Jilib district

    Kismayo (HOL) - Rival militants in the al-Shabab terrorist group clashed in the Jilib district of the Middle Jubba region on Saturday, as the country's Ministry of Defense reported.

    The confrontation erupted in the village of Hargeisa-yarey between two militant factions, each loyal to top al-Shabab leaders Mahad Karatee and Ahmed Diriye.

    The Ministry of Defense confirmed that the fight resulted in the arrest of several militants operating under Mahad Karatee's command. Both groups suffered significant casualties, but the Ministry did not mention the number of casualties.

    HOL has been unable to verify these claims independently.

    The government troops backed by international partners have intensified offensives against the terrorists since last year when President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud declared "all-out war" on the terrorist group.

    Last week, the Somali government said it killed 1,650 al-Shabaab terrorists and injured more than 550 others in the last two months during several military operations in the south-central regions.

    The biggest number of al-Shabaab casualties was announced since the current military operations against the group began late last year.
