Puntland lawmakers reject election law amendment for the second time

    Garowe (HOL) - The Puntland regional state parliament rejected the amendment to the Puntland election law on Sunday, marking the second time lawmakers have opposed the law in a few days.

    During the parliamentary session, more than 35 MPs suggested that the law should either be removed or suspended while peace efforts are underway by the SSC-Khatumo Traditional Council.

    The speaker of the parliament, Abdirashid Yusuf Jibril, stated that the law is being discussed before being brought to the house for the third time. However, tens of lawmakers accused President Said Deni of pushing for the amendments.

    The controversial law, drafted by the Election Commission, stipulates that on February 25, 2024, the president's and Presidentament's election will be held simultaneously in a one-person, one-vote election.
