Somalia Unveils Innovative National Emergency Telecom Plan for Enhanced Disaster Response

MOGADISHU (HOL) - The Somali Government has rolled out the National Emergency Telecom Plan (NETP), a crucial development aimed at strengthening disaster response. This step forward was announced during a workshop focusing on the Common Alert Protocol in Mogadishu, spanning November 13-14.

The event brought together principal entities, including the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SODMA), various telecom firms, civil defense units, health and interior ministries, and civic organizations, fostering a unified approach to emergency communications.

Dr. Mustafa Almahdi, representing the ITU, shed light on the essential role of information and communication technologies (ICT) in disaster management at the NETP's launch. He underscored the ITU's commitment to assisting nations in developing their emergency telecom strategies, providing training on the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP), and facilitating simulation exercises.

Mahmoud Ma'allim Abdulle, SODMA's Director General, underlined the NETP's critical importance, particularly given Somalia's susceptibility to disasters. He emphasized the need for a standardized alert protocol to enhance communication efficiency and response coordination.

Mustafa Yasin Sheikh, the General Manager of the National Communications Authority (NCA), pointed out the plan’s key role in bringing together a diverse array of stakeholders. He expressed optimism about the plan’s significant impact on enhancing the country’s emergency response framework.

H.E. Jama Hassan Khalif, Minister of Communications & Technology, thanked the ITU for their essential technical support in the NETP’s development. He highlighted the plan's role in facilitating better coordination among various sectors and advancing disaster preparedness and response.

The NETP is designed to create a cohesive communication network, enabling rapid and effective information exchange during emergencies. The adoption of a Common Alert Protocol ensures smooth collaboration among all relevant parties, contributing to a more coordinated and efficient disaster response. The Government anticipates the plan's implementation will significantly boost the nation's emergency resilience.
