Beledweyne (HOL) - A Somali government soldier and a civilian man were killed in floods caused by torrential rainfall in Beledweyne town, the capital of the Hiiraan region, on Monday.
The Somali Custodial and Corrections Services soldier died inside the Lamagalaay Military Base Camp, one of the areas affected by the floodwater. Officials did not add further details.
The civilian man died while crossing the Noor Hawad Bridge to reach the highland areas where residents have been fleeing since the Shabelle River breached its banks.
Minister of Information Daud Aweis told reporters in the capital, Mogadishu, on Sunday that the death toll from the floods caused by torrential rainfall had risen to 31 people in various parts of Somalia.
Since October, floods have displaced nearly half a million people and disrupted the lives of over 1.2 million, Minister of Information Daud Aweis added.
