(HOL) - The Government of Somalia is competing for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, a position that if Somalia is successful, it will hold until 2026. The seat Somalia is vying for is designated for Africa, and more specifically, it will be allocated to a country in East Africa.
On the 21st of this month, Somalia hopes that the African Union will allow it to become the African candidate for the non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2025-2026 term.
A statement from the Somali mission to the United Nations said, "Somalia can be trusted to lead the agenda for peace and security in Africa at the UNSC and will also adhere to the principles and charter of the United Nations to build a peaceful, stable, and prosperous international system.
The election for this seat, which is one of five non-permanent seats, will take place in the middle of 2024, during the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Countries that are successful will join the ten nations that occupy the non-permanent seats on the security council for a two-year term, from January 2025 until 2026.
The five seats are: one for Africa, one for Asia-Pacific, one for Latin America and the Caribbean, and two for Western Europe and other countries.
Recently, Somalia conceded its candidacy for the presidency of the world parliamentary election to Tanzania, where the speaker of the Tanzanian parliament was successful.
Somalia has stated that it has made an agreement with Tanzania to cooperate in the Security Council so that Somalia can succeed in winning the seat.
