Thursday November 2, 2023

Mogadishu (HOL) - A Somali military court sentenced former military Captain Shegow Ahmed Ali and his militia members to various sentences, including the death penalty, paying compensation, and multiple years in military prison following the conclusion of their trial on Thursday.

The court sentenced Captain Shegow Ahmed Ali to ten years in prison and ordered him to pay compensation to the family of Sakariye Mohamed Ali, whom Shegow killed. Additionally, he was also ordered to pay compensation to Deputy Officer Abdullahi Hussein Abdukhadir, whom Shegow wounded during a clash between Shegow's militia and government forces.

The commander of Shegow's militia forces, Ahmed Mohamed Hassan (Abi Ahmed), was sentenced to death for the murder of two people in a court in Jowhar town on February 13 of this year. During the court proceedings, Abi Ahmed confessed to the killings but argued that the matter had already been resolved through cultural means.

Furthermore, 18 militia members have received six-year sentences in military prison, while two others who were involved in phone robberies have been sentenced to five years in military prison.

In August, Somali police forces conducted a security operation in Mogadishu, capturing former military captain Sheegow Ahmed Ali and 25 of his armed men. The government had accused them of destabilizing the security of the capital and engaging in conflicts with security forces. The Police spokesman claimed that stolen mobile phones and counterfeit banknotes were discovered in Shegow's residence.
