Baidoa (HOL) - Mukhtar Mohamed Mursal has been elected as an MP in a by-election for HOP176 held in Baidoa. This by-election was conducted to fill the vacancy that arose when his father, Mohamed Mursal Mohamud, passed away nearly six months ago. The election was held on Sunday, and Mukhtar Mursal was elected unanimously. He will now represent the Rahanweyn-Mirifle clan from South West State.
Lower House elections in Somalia are often predictable, and this election was no exception. Mukhtar Mursal's only challenger, Khadija Samow Abdi, withdrew from the race, which cleared the way for his unchallenged victory.
101 delegates cast a ballot in the by-election.
The by-election was held after the unexpected death of Mohamed Mursal Mohamud on September 20. Mohamud was first elected to parliament in 2018 before winning a second term in January 2022.
