Somaliland military commander says forces capable of retaking disputed town of Las Anod

    Las Anod (HOL) - Somaliland military commander Brigadier General Nuh Ismail Tani stated that his forces are capable of retaking control of the disputed town of Las Anod, but they are adhering to the government's ceasefire policy.

    Speaking to local television in Hargeisa on Wednesday, Tani emphasized that the Somaliland army always follows the government's lead and has the authority to enter the city and remove those gathered in the town from Puntland.

    "I say to the people of Las Anod, the lie and prosperity that were told to you is no longer there, and we know the hunger in the city; you should return to your country and your people," Tani said, urging the people to accept Somaliland and return, claiming that certain groups had deceived them.

    The ongoing conflict, which began on December 28, 2022, has already displaced more than 185,000 people, damaged hospitals, and hindered access to medical care for the wounded.

    The fighting has killed at least 80 people and injured 451 others, including medical personnel, according to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) Human Rights and Protection Group and Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
