According to a government statement, the operation targeted leaders who were being tracked by Somali intelligence and were in a car belonging to a leader named Ibnu Bashir, who heads the Hizbada militia wing in the Hiiraan region.
The militants were likely killed by a Turkish drone strike, according to security analysts.
The statement added that the head of Hizbada's health department, named Muhsin, and the head of the group for Jalalaqsi district, called Anas, were killed during the operation.
Last week, 20 al-Shabab militants were killed in a US airstrike in the country's central region of Hiiraan.
The attack targeted vehicles belonging to al-Shabaab members, resulting in the deaths of 20 militants.
