A mum from Leicester hosted an Somali culture workshop in the heart of the city in a bid to break down racial barriers and stereotypes, while giving people from other backgrounds a opportunity to experience her culture. Founder of ZamZam Unlimited Possibilities CIC, 36-year-old ZamZam Yusuf was the mastermind behind last week's event.

The mum-of-four told LeicestershireLive that she wanted people a real insight into what it means to be Somalian, while also teaching people things that they may not know about the culture. Leicester has a massive Somali community, but according to ZamZam there is still some ignorance surrounding the culture.

The workshop was held at Highcross’ John Lewis community cafe, on Wednesday, June 14. Attendees had the chance to indulge in Somali food and snacks, try on traditional clothing, and learn key words and phrases.

Officers from Leicestershire Police were also in attendance, raising awareness of the work that they do in the city centre, while also getting stuck into the day's events. The days events gave people an insight into the beauty of ZamZam's background, and she said that she hopes that this will bridge the gap between Somali residents and others.

Photos below give a glimpse into what the workshop had to offer.
