Wednesday July 26, 2023

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali Custodial Corps Commander, General Mahad Abdirahman Aden, has highlighted the significant injustice prevailing in the country's prisons, particularly in Mogadishu's capital.

Speaking in Mogadishu on Wednesday, General Mahad pointed out that numerous prisoners have been incarcerated for a decade, facing unjust treatment while waiting for their cases to be resolved.

"Our department is responsible for custodial services, which includes justice for detainees and inmates, but the reality is that justice is lacking in this country. We have individuals languishing in prisons for close to ten years. I propose that we examine our detention facilities and ensure justice is served. The Police, Prosecutors, and Security Ministries should inspect the prisons, evaluate each case, and ascertain the reasons for their arrests. Let's truly act in the pursuit of justice," said Commander Mahad Abdirahman Aden Shub.

The Commander's statement comes as ongoing efforts by the Somali government to enhance the country's judicial system, combat corruption and misappropriation of public assets.
