Baidoa (HOL) - The Somali National Army on Tuesday killed 25 al-Shabab militants, including five foreign fighters, during an operation in the Bakool region of southwest Somalia, officials said.
The Somali government confirmed the militants killed in
the operations in Wajid district, but it has not disclosed the nationalities of
the five foreign fighters.
The commissioner of Wajid district in Bakool region, Mohamed Moalin Yusuf, told the media that some of the bodies of the Al-Shabaab militants were brought to Wajid district. The operation conducted on Tuesday aimed to prevent further attacks by members of Al-Shabaab who were planning an assault on the district.
This operation comes just days after the South West Regional State administration announced a new anti-al Shabab operation in response to the group's imposition of a two-week blockade on the southwestern town of Baidoa, effectively cutting off transportation to and from the area.
