Somali President arrives in Jowhar to address political conflict and clan fighting

Tuesday July 18, 2023

Jowhar (HOL) - Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived in Jowhar, the interim capital of the Hirshabelle regional state, on Wednesday to address the political standoff within the Hirshabelle administration and address the recurring inter-clan fighting in the Middle Shabelle region.

President Mohamud's delegation was welcomed by Hirshabelle lawmakers and ministers at Jowhar Airport. President Mohamud is scheduled to meet with the regional leaders to discuss the pressing issues at hand.

The political conflict in the Hirshabelle administration arose when Ali Jeyte, the former governor of the Hiiraan region, refused to step down after being removed from office by the regional President last month. Governor Abdullahi Ahmed Maalin Sufurow was appointed as Jeyte's replacement but has not yet officially assumed office due to Jeyte's refusal to step down. Dr. Abdinur Sheikh Mohamed, a former Somali Presidential candidate, voiced his support for the ousted governor and strongly opposed Jeyte's removal, citing his exceptional leadership in the fight against Al-Shabaab on behalf of his people. Dr. Abdinur also criticized the Hirshabelle President's action as aggressive.

Meanwhile, the Middle Shabelle region has experienced a resurfacing clan conflict, leading to heightened tensions. The Minister of the Interior for the Hirshabelle administration, Abdi Dahir Guure Karore, urgently called upon the Federal Government of Somalia to intervene. Minister Karore emphasized the severe impact on local residents caused by the ongoing conflict between the Raagge Ceelle and Adale districts, involving two local clan militias. He said he had been actively engaged in mediating efforts, holding dialogues with elders from both communities, to restore peace.

Residents of Hiiraan State elected Jeyte as the interim President in late June, but the Federal government did not recognize his title or a new Federal Member State under a separate Hiiraan administration.
