Former Somali Presidential candidate challenges removal of Hiiraan governor, supports Ali Jeyte

Monday July 17, 2023

Beledweyne (HOL) - Former Somali Presidential candidate Dr. Abdinur Sheikh Mohamed strongly opposes the removal of Ali Jeyte, the former governor of the Hiiraan region, asserting that he still recognizes Jeyte as the rightful governor.

Speaking to local television in Mogadishu on Monday, he emphasized that Ali Jeyte deserves special recognition and appreciation for his leadership in the fight against Al-Shabaab on behalf of his people. He criticized his removal from office by Hirshabelle President as aggressive.

"While a position can be taken away, Ali Jeyte is a hero who has dedicated himself to the nation and deserves to be rewarded. It is unfair to dismiss someone from his position while he is away on duty. I firmly believe that the people of Hiiraan will not fight amongst themselves over trivial matters," Abdinur Sheikh Mohamed stated.

The former Minister of Education, Dr. Abdinur, mentioned ongoing efforts to resolve the conflict in Hiiraan, which he discussed with President Hassan Sheikh, addressing the grievances expressed by the people of Hiiraan regarding the administrative system of Hirshabelle.

"I fully support the desires of the people of Hiiraan. I have spoken to the President about the formation of Hirshabelle State and suggested the establishment of a dedicated committee to address these concerns," Dr. Abdinur Sheikh Mohamed added.

Dr. Abdinur was among the political leaders who attended last week's consultative meeting between President Hassan Sheikh Mogadishu and former leaders in Mogadishu. The consultative meeting aimed at discussing political and security challenges facing the country.

Several weeks ago, Hirshabelle President Ali Hussein Guudlawe dismissed Ali Jeyte Osman, the governor of the Hiiraan region, and appointed Abdullahi Ahmed Maalin Sufurow as his replacement. Governor Sufurow has not officially assumed office as Jeyte refuses to step down and has reportedly been elected by residents as the interim President of Hiiraan State, an administration not recognized by the Federal government.
