Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali government troops, with the support of local militia forces, carried out a planned operation in Barag Isse village in the Mudug region on Monday, resulting in the deaths of two al-Shabab militants.
Government officials reported that one of the prominent al-Shabab leaders in the area, Hashi Garad Ali, was apprehended during the operation. "Ali is known for his involvement in the extortion of livestock from rural communities," according to a brief statement released by the Federal Government of Somalia.
Despite these operations, al-Shabab militants remain active in several areas of the Mudug and Galgaduud regions within the Galmudug state. Central Somalia continues to face frequent attacks from the militant group.
Monday’s operations follow an operation conducted by the elite Danab unit of the Somali National Army in the Lower Jubba region two days ago, resulting in the deaths of over 40 al-Shabab terrorists, including key leaders.
The operation in the Lower Jubba region, supported by international security partners, targeted a gathering place used by the terrorist group in the village of Welmaro.
Welmaro is located 40 kilometers (24 miles) from the town of Afmadow in the Lower Jubba region in the southern state of Jubaland.
