Tuesday July 11, 2023

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre presided over a meeting on Monday to discuss the preparation of Somalia's admission to the East African Community (EAC) bloc, a month after the regional body leaders adopted the report on the membership of Somalia.

The meeting was attended by government officials from various branches and focused on the country's level of preparation in terms of technical and financial aspects.

During the meeting, officials emphasized the need for thorough preparations for the upcoming negotiations with the East African Community. Prime Minister Barre expressed his commitment to regional integration and cooperation, highlighting the opportunities and benefits that Somalia's membership in the EAC would bring to the business, economy, and transportation sectors.

The Prime Minister emphasized that joining the EAC would create investment opportunities and jobs, significantly contributing to the country's economy. Furthermore, he mentioned that Somali businesspeople would have access to a larger market without taxation.

Somalia's Presidential Special Envoy to the EAC, Abdusalam Omer, presented reports on the different stages of the government's application, the negotiation approach, and the current status.

Last month the heads of state of the East African Community (EAC) adopted a report verifying the application of Somalia to join the regional bloc.

The EAC leaders directed the EAC Council of Ministers and the EAC secretariat to start negotiations with Somalia and report to the next ordinary summit of the EAC heads of state.

Somalia made its first application to join the EAC in 2012, while the verification mission was not conducted immediately due to various reasons.

Somalia shares borders with one EAC member country of Kenya and has strong historical, linguistic, economic and socio-cultural links with all the EAC member states.

The EAC has seven member states, namely Burundi, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania.
