Kismayo (HOL) - A fierce battle broke out on Monday between Al-Shabab militants and federal troops, supported by Jubbaland region forces, in the Lower Jubba region. The confrontation occurred during a joint operation conducted by the Somali army in villages within the Dhobley districts.
According to residents, the clash occurred as Al-Shabab militants regrouped in the area and engaged in combat with the joint forces, resulting in casualties. However, military officials have not provided any statements to the media.
Eyewitnesses reported the use of heavy artillery by both sides during the confrontation.
The extremist group has escalated its attacks on towns along the Somalia-Kenya border, leading to the deaths of nearly 20 security officers in recent weeks.
Kenya's Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Francis Omondi Ogolla, arrived in Kismayo on Saturday for a meeting with Jubbaland Regional State President Ahmed Madobe at the Presidential Palace. The two leaders discussed the region's security situation and the recently concluded troop drawdown by the African Transitional Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).
