Mogadishu police arrest terror suspects with explosives and weapons

Friday February 24, 2023

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali police forces have apprehended a network believed to belong to the al Shabab group following a security operation in Mogadishu's Hodan district on Thursday.

Police spokesman Sadik Adan Ali Dodishe said at a press conference that eight men were preparing explosives devices on an auto-rickshaw and loading other weapons on a minibus to be taken to the al Shabab-controlled Sakow district.

The operation was made possible by collaboration between police and intelligence forces and with the assistance of the public, he added.

"Eight members of the al-Shabaab network were apprehended, along with weapons, ammunition, explosives, and 100 small mobile phones and batteries. These are the most commonly used items in explosions.

The explosives were being loaded onto the minibus for transport to the Sakow district," said the spokesman for the Dodishe Police Department.

The arrested group will also be brought before the courts, according to the police spokesman.

This operation took place a week after the military court in Mogadishu sentenced a 60-year-old training instructor from the Jaalla Siyad military academy to 15 years in prison for passing information from the Army to the terrorist group.

Security agencies stated that Abdi Aziz Hussein Noor Mursal was falsely claiming the rank of lieutenant colonel, when in fact, he was a second lieutenant.
