Political agreement in Baidoa seen as precursor to Somali government extension

Monday February 20, 2023

Mogadishu (HOL) - Former Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed's Himilo Qaran party has opposed what it calls the extension of government agencies, including the Presidency and Parliament.

In a statement issued on Monday, the political party stated that it opposes any extension, urging Federal Government leaders to uphold the law and refrain from any extension.

The political party also believes that the political agreement reached earlier this month in Baidoa between President Hassan Sheikh, South West state leaders, and South West opposition candidates was a precursor to the government's extension.

HOL learned that groups of lawmakers filed a motion to extend the government's term.

In 2021, the same chamber of the parliament voted to extend the mandate of former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo and the federal government by two years in a bid to end a political stalemate over national elections.

However, the opposition candidates, led by current President Mohamud and former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, pushed the parliament to cancel the presidential term extension.
