Somali military instructor jailed for 15 years for passing army secrets to Al-Shabaab

    Mogadishu (HOL) - A military court in Mogadishu sentenced a 60-year-old training instructor from the Jaalla Siyad military academy to 15 years in prison on Sunday after he was found guilty of passing information from the Army to the terrorist group.

    Security agencies stated that Abdi Azis Hussein Noor Mursal was falsely claiming the rank of lieutenant colonel, but the fact that he was second Lieutenant.

    The previous government had exposed him during the Army's registration. Allegedly, he began cooperating with Al-Shabaab out of rage over the investigation.

    The security agencies and the prosecution office of the armed forces court stated that Abdi Azis Hussein Noor Mursal was the officer who shared army secrets with al-Shabab.

    He is the second government official to be discovered collaborating with Al-Shabaab.

    Two weeks ago, the same military court sentenced a former army officer to death for his role in facilitating terror attacks on behalf of Al Shabaab.

    Sharif Mohamed Barkhadle Ayanle, a 53-year-old former captain in the SNA, was convicted of aiding the Al Qaeda-linked militants to plant car bombs throughout Mogadishu, which killed a total of 27 people.

    The court found that in several instances, Ayanle allowed Al Shabaab to travel through checkpoints and park their explosive-laden vehicles in busy commercial areas throughout the capital, including Village Hotel and Restaurant, Bar Italia, Agaweyne - Bilsan Restaurant and Lido beach.
    All of the car bomb attacks occurred in 2019.

    He was also found guilty of selling two mortar rounds and 40 rounds of ammunition to Al Shabaab, which was later used to shell Mogadishu.
