Mogadishu (HOL) - Police in Mogadishu apprehended three men who are accused of defrauding internally displaced people IDPs with the promise of free rations and other aid.
Officers from the Dharkeenley district arrested the fraud gang after receiving multiple reports from locals.
The men are accused of posing as aid workers before creating fake ID cards and charging displaced people living near the Mogadishu airport 10$ with the promise that they would receive food rations.
The men will be remanded at the Dharkeenley Police Station in Mogadishu before their court arraignment.
According to recent reports, theft, robbery and fraud by armed youth gangs – known as Ciyaal Weero – are on the rise in Mogadishu. Unemployment, the use of drugs, and weak local government are seen as the
leading causes of the uptick in crime.
