Kenya to equip border officers with skills to combat crime and terrorism

Tuesday December 19, 2023

Kenya has long grappled with securing its extensive borders. From the arid plains shared with Somalia to the lush highlands bordering Uganda, these entry points have presented complex challenges, ranging from the infiltration of militant groups to the intricacies of managing cross-border trade. However, today marks a turning point.

In a major move to bolster national security, the government has launched the Border Security and Control Program, a comprehensive training initiative aimed at equipping frontline officers with the knowledge and skills to safeguard the country’s borders. The program, unveiled by Dr. Raymond Omollo, Principal Secretary for Internal Security, marks a collaborative effort between the Border Control and Operations Coordination Committee (BCOCC) and the Kenya School of Government.

The curriculum, meticulously crafted after a thorough assessment of critical border points, delves into the intricacies of border security, migration management, control protocols, and trade facilitation. Recognizing the evolving nature of border threats, the program also equips officers to combat transnational organized crime and emerging security challenges.

“This is not just about theory,” emphasized Dr. Omollo. “This curriculum is designed to be a practical, hands-on tool, empowering our officers at ports of entry and exit across land, air, and sea.”

The launch ceremony, held at the Kenya School of Government, brought together key figures like IOM Chief of Mission Sharon Dimanche and representatives from various ministries and agencies.

The Border Security and Control Program will be a blueprint that will help not just for Kenya but nations facing similar security concerns. It demonstrates a proactive approach to border management, prioritizing the safety and well-being of citizens while promoting economic prosperity through secure and efficient cross-border movement. With this initiative, Kenya takes a bold step towards a more secure future, one checkpoint at a time.
