Dadaab-Garissa road bomb attack: 4 killed, 2 injured in IED explosion

Friday December 15, 2023

Garissa (HOL) - An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonated along the Dadaab-Garissa road, claiming the lives of four people and injuring two others. The explosion occurred as a vehicle carrying around ten health officials involved in a tuberculosis control exercise in Garissa County passed between Egge Dam and Bogyar.

The two injured were promptly evacuated to a local hospital and are reported to be in serious condition. The blast interrupted a period of relative calm in the area, attributed to heavy rains that had impeded transportation and reduced the frequency of such attacks.

Following the blast, police have stepped up operations in the region to counter the persistent threat of terrorism. These intensified efforts have led to the prevention of numerous planned attacks and the elimination of several terror suspects. In a notable operation last month, two members of the Al Shabaab terror group, posing as doctors, were killed by police in Fafi, Garissa County. The raid occurred in the Hagarso area, where the militants operated a medical camp. Materials for making IEDs and medical supplies were recovered from the site.

The area's proximity to the Kenya-Somalia border complicates security efforts, as the porous border allows for the movement of Al Shabaab militants. The frequent attacks have led to the ongoing suspension of plans to reopen the border, which has been closed since 2011.

In recent months, security forces have also targeted Al Shabaab logistics bases, destroying supplies essential for the militants' operations. One such base in Dahun, Fafi, was recently dismantled, confiscating foodstuffs and other supplies.
