"My resignation is driven by an evolving earnestness of the situation in the Southwest State of Somalia and following the advice of the public and politicians from the state, acknowledge that it's substantial to put extra time into working on the interest of Southwest State and its people in which I suppose requires an attentive leadership with the expertise, trust, and knowledge, and guide the Southwest to become Somalia's leading state in terms of prosperity and development," he wrote on his Facebook page.

The former one-term Senator pledged to ensure the Southwest obtains leadership that embodies justice, effectiveness, and trust across all spheres.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud appointed him Chief of Staff on May 23, 2023, replacing Mohamed Abdullahi Isse.

Hussein Sheikh Mohamud was born in Hudur, the capital of the Bakol region, in 1982. He later moved to Mogadishu, where he completed a Master's degree in Development Studies. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Peace and governance.
