Hirshabelle President accuses Somali military of establishing illegal checkpoints

Wednesday April 5, 2023

Jowhar (HOL) - Hirshabelle Regional State President Ali Hussein Gudlawe has accused a group of Somali military forces of setting up illegal checkpoints on roadways connecting the state's major towns to Mogadishu.

During Wednesday's weekly state meeting in Jowhar, Gudlawe said he has shared his concerns about the checkpoints with federal government leaders, but no action has been taken to date.

"These rogue soldiers, wearing government uniforms, driving government vehicles, and receiving government wages, are troubling travelers at these illegal checkpoints. They have defamed the army and the government, and tarnished the reputation of the state," Gudlawe stated.

He emphasized, "I want to clarify that these checkpoints are not intended for the general population; they are meant for military personnel."

Last week, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, while visiting the Aden Yabal district in the Middle Shabelle region, urged residents to steer clear of illegal checkpoints. He expressed disappointment that the Middle Shabelle region still suffers from the presence of such checkpoints, resulting in harassment of local residents.

"Although the government cannot deploy troops in every location," emphasized President Hassan Sheikh, "the local populace is ubiquitous and can collaborate to combat this problem." He emphasized the significance of tackling the issue, and stated that those who establish illicit checkpoints are a national threats.
