Tuesday April 4, 2023

Mogadishu (HOL) - The African Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) and Somali Police Force have issued conflicting reports regarding an explosion that injured three women at the KM4 junction in Mogadishu on Monday.

ATMIS stated that their convoy was attacked by an improvised explosive device (IED), adding that a  security situation assessment was underway.

However, the Somali police said that the explosion occurred in an armoured JAMES truck accompanying a convoy of ATMIS forces as it was passing through the road entering the KM4 intersection, specifically around the CID headquarters.

"The explosion occurred around the CID headquarters in front of the Giyajo Hotel. It happened on a JAMES truck that was part of a convoy of the ATMIS Army from Burundi,"  a statement from the Somali Police Command said.

According to officials, the three victims were roadside khat traders injured by debris from the explosion.

Eyewitnesses also believed something on the AU troops' vehicle caused the explosion.

There has been no immediate claim of responsibility.
