Mogadishu (HOL) - At least ten people were killed in heavy fighting between al Shabab and anti-al Shabab militia in the Celey area, about 30km from Mahas district in the Hiiraan region, on Tuesday night.
According to the residents, both sides used heavy artillery during the fight, resulting in casualties.
Villagers have recently increased their fighting against the militants after the group began to force the locals to surrender, which the locals said would never happen and would fight with them to the last drop.
Al-Shabab fighters have killed at least 19 civilians and destroyed trucks laden with food aid in an overnight attack on the outskirts of Beledweyne, a town around 300 km north of Mogadishu.
The trucks were transporting food supplies from Baladweyne city to Mahas town.
The al-Qaeda-linked group has battled Somalia’s central government for over a decade. It wants to establish its own rule based on a strict interpretation of Islamic law.
