SJS leader to appear before Banadir court

    Mogadishu (HOL) - Banadir regional court will hear the case against the Secretary General of the Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS), journalist Abdalla Ahmed Muumin for the first time on Sunday.

    Abdalle Ahmed Mumin was arrested in Mogadishu on Tuesday as he prepared to board a flight to Nairobi on a business trip.

    Journalists' rights groups have said that Mumin's detention stems from a government directive banning media groups from disseminating pro-Al Shabaab propaganda.

    The Ministry of Information said he is being held on a security-related charge and not related to his work as a journalist.

    Local and international journalists groups condemned the arrest of the SJS leader and called on the government to release him immediately.

    Members of various Somali journalist unions have expressed concern about the new government directive, calling it "vaguely worded," and worry that authorities can weaponize it against legitimate journalism.
