Somali President chairs weekly cabinet meeting

Friday October 7, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud, together with Prime Minister, Hamsa Abdi Barre, chaired the weekly meeting of the Council of Ministers on Thursday.

The meeting presented the emergency plan for drought relief, development, and stabilization of al-Shabaab-liberated areas.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud stated that the situation for people in al-Shabab-controlled areas was dire and that the government would send humanitarian aid to recently liberated militant-held villages.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud urged the Council of Ministers to prioritize the fight against Al-Shabaab, a threat to the Somali government.

He praised the Somali people for their support for Somalia's forces and stated that his government is committed to liberating areas controlled by the militant group of al-Shabab.

The offensive primarily continues in the Hiiraan region, where government forces backed by local government-allied militia groups have retaken more than 20 villages from militants.
