Deputy Speaker’s brother killed by gunmen in the capital

Monday November 7, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - The Deputy Speaker of Parliament’s younger brother was killed by gunmen in Mogadishu on Monday.

Abdirahman Omar Abshirow, a recent university graduate, was killed in the Dharkeyley district. His killers fled the scene before being apprehended.

Parliament speaker Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur Madobe sent condolences to the Second Deputy Speaker of the House of People, Abdullahi Omar Abshirow,  Abdirahman’s elder brother.

"Speaking on behalf of myself and the entire parliament, I send my deepest condolences to the second Deputy speaker of the People's Assembly, Abdullahi Omar Abshirow whose brother Abdirahman Omar Abshirow was killed by armed men this morning in Dharkeynley District of Mogadishu," the speaker said.

Nobody has claimed responsibility for the murder, although local police suspect al-Shabaab to be the culprit.

Military courts in Mogadishu have executed close to ten men since October, many of whom were convicted of carrying out assassinations in the capital.

Attacks and explosions have increased in Somalia’s capital in recent weeks as the militant insurgency group al-Shabaab has suffered multiple battlefield defeats at the hands of joint SNA and clan militia forces in central Somalia.

At least a dozen people may have been killed on Saturday evening after a suicide bomber targeted a military training facility in the southern part of Somalia's capital, Mogadishu.

Al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack.
