Roadside explosion in Mogadishu kills 2 students

Thursday November 3, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - At least two people have been killed and five others wounded by a roadside explosion that hit a vehicle carrying students in the Dayniile district of Mogadishu.

According to witnesses, the explosion may have been targeting a vehicle of government soldiers nearby.

Residents believe that it may have been a Radio Controlled Improvised Explosive Device (RCIED)

Police spokesman Sadiq Doodishe said that both of the victims were students.

"People travelling with the students were among those injured, as were bystanders. This attack and other incidents demonstrate that al-Shabab targets civilians indiscriminately."

Daynille residents said that gunfire was heard after the explosions, but it is believed to have come from government soldiers.

Police and military have cordoned off the blast site and are investigating, but no arrests have been made.

So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the explosion. Al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab frequently conducts assaults on civilian and government targets in Somalia's capital.

Al-Shabab claimed responsibility for two truck bombs that exploded at a busy intersection in the capital on Saturday, killing more than 120 people. The group claimed to have targeted the Ministry of Education.
