Gov Jeyte warns Ma'awiisley fighters not to target Al Shabaab wives, children

    Beledweyne (HOL) - Hiiraan Governor Ali Jeyte Osman told Ma'awiisley fighters that the children and wives of Al Shabaab fighters should not be targeted arbitrarily.

    Jeyte said that the bounty placed on Al Shabaab fighters only applies to active members, not their families.

    The governor made the comments after a Tuesday raid on a house in the Aboorey area that killed an Al Shabaab member's son and wounded another one of his children.

    Two weeks ago, the governor walked back comments he made that called for targeting Al Shabaab members' families in reprisal attacks. Security experts and rights groups expressed alarm at the open call for extrajudicial killings. Days later, the Ministry of the Defense spokesman Brigadier General Abdullahi Ali Aanood instructed the military and pro-government militia forces not to kill non-combatants and enemies who surrendered.

    Jeyte also declared that his administration would pay fighters up to $25,000 for killing Al Shabab extremists in the continuing conflict in central Somalia.
