Thursday May 26, 2022

Berbera (HOL) - Somcable Submarine Network has launched its second submarine internet cable in a month in the coastal town of Berbera on Wednesday.

The launching event in Berbera was attended by lawmakers and ministers from the Somaliland government. The company's public relations officer, Abdirizak Hassan Rakuub, said that the company had launched 2Africa internet cable and led Somaliland in the direction of technology.

2Africa is one of the largest subsea projects in the world, connecting 46 cable landing stations in 33 countries in Africa, Asia, and Europe, with a cable length of 45,000km.

2Africa is now the longest subsea cable in the world, followed by SMW3 of 39,000km.

Earlier this month, the PEACE Cable Company and Somcable, have landed a new submarine cable in Berbera as part of efforts to improve Somaliland’s internet access.

According to the International Telecommunications Union, internet usage in Somalia is slow, with only 1.6 percent of the country's population online.
