Somali army nabs al Shabaab leader in Lower Shabelle region

    Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali National Army said Sunday that its forces arrested a senior al Shabaab commander during a security operation in Merca town, Lower Shabelle region.

    SNA officials said that Aweys Mayow Eelay, the group's head of explosives in Merca town, was captured while planting landmines.

    The military officials added that Aweys, whose photo was circulated to be behind landmine attacks as grenades and landmines were seized from his residence in Merca.

    Somali National Army (SNA) intensified security operations against al Shabaab in Lower Shabelle regions as the country's new president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud vowed to eradicate terrorist groups.
