In Photos: Residents in Mogadishu celebrate Eid ahead of contentious Presidential election

Tuesday May 3, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - People in Somalia have marked the end of the holy month of Ramadan by praying together and praying for the country because the Eid al-Fitr celebrations of this year coincided as the country’s long-overdue election process draws to a close.

This time of the last year, residents in Mogadishu were worried after fighting erupted between different sections of the security forces during the last ten days of Ramadan. The battle was sparked by President Farmajo’s failed bid to extend his term by two years despite stiff opposition.

However, during this year’s Ramadan, Somalia’s lawmakers elected leadership of the parliament, and the president is expected to be elected before May 15.
