Thursday March 17, 2022

MOGADISHU (HOL) - More Somali students will access to the UK Chevening Scholarships thanks to a new partnership between the UK government and Hormuud Salaam Foundation

The UK embassy in Mogadishu announced Wednesday that it had entered into a partnership deal with the Foundation to expand access to the prestigious scholarship programme.

"The partnership will support outstanding individuals to gain the academic skills, experience and networks, so that they can contribute to Somalia’s continued development," the statement read in part.

"This partnership provides the funding for two additional Chevening scholars each year for the next three academic years, to benefit from this highly competitive, life-changing opportunity."

UK ambassador to Somalia Kate Foster lauded the entry of Hormuud Salaam Foundation noting it will go a long way into affording more Somalis quality post graduate education.

"I am particularly delighted to announce our new partnership with the Hormuud Salaam Foundation, to support more aspiring Chevening scholars to benefit from this opportunity," ambassador Foster said.

"Through partnerships like these, future Somali leaders are better able to realise their potential and work to build a better, brighter, more prosperous future for Somalia.”

On his part, Hormuud Salaam Foundation CEO Abdullahi Osman said his organisation was keen on building Somalia's human resources.

“Somalia has one of the youngest populations on earth, with so much budding potential. We are proud to support some of our best and brightest, giving them the opportunity to study at one of the top institutions in the UK.”

The partnership will support scholars to pursue Master’s degrees in the following areas at any accredited university in the UK: Marketing Management, Journalism/Mass Communication/Strategic Communications, Human Resource Management, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Data Science, Asset Management, Investment Management and Petroleum Engineering.
Over 70 Somali students have benefited from the Chevening Scholarships programme since 2016.
