Heavy fighting reported between Liyu Police and Al Shabaab in Bakool region

    Mogadishu (HOL) - Heavy fighting between Liyu police forces and al Shabaab militants was reported in the Aato district in Somalia’s Bakool region after the militant group carried out an attack started with mortar shells early hours on Friday.

    Residents said that the fight had affected all activities of public transport, business and the movement of people, and a tense situation still exists in the district.

    The casualties caused by the fight remain unknown.

    Heavy fighting was reported Wednesday after al-Shabab militants attacked Yeed and Aato districts in the Bakool region, along the border with Ethiopia.

    In two weeks, the militants attacked the Liyu police forces in the Aato district for the second time.

    Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF) operating in Somalia as part of a bilateral security deal between Ethiopia and Somalia rely on the Liyu police for border protection and supply route safety and logistics.
