President Mohamud's spokesman denies Somalia has taken up Egypt's position on the GERD dispute

Tuesday July 26, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - The Spokesman for Villa Somalia, Abdikarin Ali Kaar, said that the Presidents of Egypt and Somalia shared no official joint position on the construction and filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on the Blue Nile.

Kaar's comments come a day after Somalia's President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud made a high-level state visit to Cairo to discuss regional issues with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.

While speaking to reporters alongside President Mohamud, El-Sisi said that Ethiopia's construction of the dam without consulting regional stakeholders was "dangerous" and insinuated that the Somali President agreed with Egypt's position.

A statement released by the office of the Egyptian president after the meeting revealed that the two leaders discussed the security of the red sea and the rand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, agreeing to "strengthen coordination and joint intensive consultations to follow-up on these developments."

However, on Tuesday, Villa Somalia's spokesman said President Mohamud did not clarify Somalia's position on the Nile River during the joint press conference in Cairo.

Kaar added that the government of Somalia's position is to advocate that all parties follow the international laws that regulate Nile water usage.
