Mogadishu (HOL) - A plane carrying food aid from Mogadishu landed in Bula Burte district of Hiiraan region on Thursday as part of efforts to help drought-affected people in the country.
Khadija Mohamed Diriye, the country's outgoing minister of humanitarian affairs and disaster management, said, "We are still in the process of finalizing the distribution of the humanitarian aid to the most affected districts and some of the areas under siege from al Shabaab."
The ministry did not specify the number of tons it sent to Bula Burte, but local people said that it is insufficient to address the needs of those suffering from the drought in the district.
Bula Burte is one of the districts most affected by the current severe drought in Somalia. In addition, the district has been under siege from Al-Shabaab for almost ten years.
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Somalia is currently one of the most severely drought-impacted country in the Horn of Africa. Some 4.5 million Somalis are directly affected by the drought, and about 700,000 people have been displaced.
