Somali leaders agree to conclude elections in February 25

MOGADISHU (HOL) - The long running Lower House elections should be concluded by February 25 to allow the country elect a new president, a six days meeting between Prime Minister Mohamed Roble and regional government presidents had resolved.

A communique by the National Consultative Council which has been meeting in Mogadishu for about a week now set out the new timelines Sunday.

The elections, NCC resolved should conclude between January 15 and February.

The Council also said the AMISOM will be responsible for the security of Villa Somalia but was silent on handing over overall security of the country to Prime Minister Roble as earlier envisaged.

Further, the Council scrapped fees for delegates to participate in the election of MPs. According to electoral rules, delegates were required to pay $30 to participate in the election of MPs.

The talks have been running for six days in Mogadishu and have reportedly been marred by differences over command of security forces.
